Show Review

A brief synopsis of the play follows...

'The Head That Wouldn't Die' is a riotously funny spoof of the 1950’s B-movie Sci-Fi and Horror films complete with werewolves, robots, aliens, and disembodied heads.

Janice Arden, a young scientist and medical doctor to be, and her dimwitted but loveable best friend Penny Taylor must save Glen Logan, Penny’s boyfriend, after accidentally shooting him through the heart three times.  They remove Glen’s head and, through a miracle of science, keep it alive while they search for a new body to replace his old one. Meanwhile, the community is in complete terror of a 'madman' who has been killing and maiming people all over town.  Janice calls upon her nerdy friend Luke Lacombe and his creation, the B7, a highly sophisticated robot to be the replacement body for Glen.  But is the B7 really who Luke says he is?   Will Janice and Penny find a replacement body for Glen before it’s too late?  And who (or what) is the 'madman' that has been mangling bodies all over town?

All this and more was revealed to the delight and laughter of the audience during our recent autumn production.

Photographs from the Show

The following images were kindly provided by Janet Shepherd and Tony Day. Members can download a pdf file containing further low resolution images from Tony by logging on and visiting our 'Dowloads' page. For a CD of Tony's high resolution images see below.

'What's this? Glen dead? Penny to be charged with the murder? And what are these experiments of which Penny speaks? Stay tuned. The most amazing part of our story is yet to come.'

'The body was dead but you saved the head. The first full body amputation in medical history. It is nothing short of a miracle.

'Janice Arden. Penny Taylor. Meet...B7!'

'Luke left detailed instructions in that letter'

'Yeah. Step one: Faint dead away.'

'Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?...'

'That's not Glen!'

'Flora! Just untie us!'

'I'm baking a cake.'

'What?'

'Janice Arden. I'm placing you under arrest.'

Members trip to "Storm on the Lawn", 15 August 2009

A very enjoyable evening was had by six of us at the Storm on the Lawn in the grounds of Prior Park College, where some sixty young actors from 'The Egg' workshop attached to the Theatre Royal performed an interwoven selection from the Grimm Tales. The college's impressive 18th century Ball Court theatre, with its open roof and multi-level columned interior, formed the ideal backdrop for a most energetic and humorous production, all to the sound of the breeze blowing through the trees under a stary sky. All this and a picnic in the grounds to start everything off too!

Members trip to see "Amadeus" on 30 June 2009
A number of us recently attended an exceptional performance of Amadeus at The Mission Theatre in Bath, which recants the fall from favour and eventual demise of the musical genius through the recollections of his awe-struck though bitterly envious contempory, Antonio Salieri, who was brilliantly played by John Matthews of the Next Stage Theatre Company.

Despite the humidity of the evening, which was only marginally lessened by a cold beer or two at the interval, an excellent time was had by one and all.
